Install uv\n\n[uv](https://docs.astral.sh/uv/) is a Python package manager. If you don't\nhave it yet:\n\n```bash\ncurl -LsSf https://astral.sh/uv/install.sh | sh\n```\n\nAfter installing, **restart your terminal** so `uv` is on your PATH.\n\nVerify it works:\n\n```bash\nuv --version\n```\n\n### 2. Get an OpenAI API key\n\nPaperQA2 uses OpenAI for embeddings and internal reasoning. Get a key at\nhttps://platform.openai.com/api-keys\n\n### 3. Test that it runs\n\nThis downloads ~90 Python packages the first time — that's normal:\n\n```bash\nuvx paperqa-mcp-server --help 2>/dev/null; echo \"OK if no Python errors above\"\n```\n\n### 4. Add to Claude Desktop\n\n1. Open Claude Desktop\n2. Go to **Settings → Developer → Edit Config**\n3. This opens `claude_desktop_config.json`.
