Find your API key in LawRuler:\n**Setup → 3rd Party Integrations**.\n\nBy default both values are stored in your operating system's native secret store\nvia the cross-platform [`keyring`](https://github.com/jaraco/keyring) library:\n\n| OS      | Backend                                  |\n| ------- | ---------------------------------------- |\n| macOS   | Keychain                                 |\n| Windows | Credential Manager                       |\n| Linux   | Secret Service (GNOME Keyring / KWallet) |\n\nSecrets are saved under the service name `lawruler-mcp`. Nothing is written to\ndisk in clear text.\n\n**File fallback.** On a host with no keyring backend (e.g. a headless Linux box\nwithout Secret Service), or if you set `LAWRULER_MCP_USE_KEYRING=0`, the values\nfall back to a `~/.lawruler-mcp/.env` file with `0600` permissions:\n\n```text\nLAWRULER_BASE_URL=https://yourfirm.lawruler.com\nLAWRULER_API_KEY=your_api_key\n```\n\n**Read order.** Values resolve in the order OS keyring → process environment →\n`.env` file.
