There is deliberately **no API key in it**: the first\ntime a tool needs one, ask your assistant to sign in.\n\n## Signing in\n\nSay *\"sign in to EssenceTeacher\"*. The `sign_in` tool prints a short code and a\nURL; open it in a browser where you are already signed in, approve the code, and\nthe key is collected once and stored at `~/.config/essenceteacher/api_key`\n(owner-read only). Later sessions just work.\n\nNo key is ever pasted into a chat. Only teaching staff can approve — a student\naccount is refused by the server.\n\nIf you would rather manage the credential yourself, set `ESSENCETEACHER_API_KEY`\nand `sign_in` is never needed. `ESSENCETEACHER_API_URL` points at a different\ndeployment; it defaults to `https://api.essencescholar.com` (the API host — `study.essencescholar.com` is the web app and will not answer).\n\n## Tools\n\n**Getting in** — `sign_in`, `whoami`\n\n**Courses** — `list_courses`, `course_details`, `list_materials`, `gradebook`\n\n**Assignments** — `list_assignments`, `get_assignment`, `assignment_usage`,\n`list_submissions`\n\n**Student support** — `flagged_questions`, `announcements`\n\n**Long jobs** — `list_jobs`, `get_job`\n\nStart at `list_courses`; its ids feed everything else.\n\n## It reads; it does not act\n\nEvery tool here is read-only.
